Gender Violence in Sports in Nepal

Last Research Conducted
This is well-known that sportsmen encounter a number of problems even at the international level. Nepal is no exception to it. Moreover, women sportsmen are compelled to face additional difficulties. It is frequently reported that women are prohibited from taking part in some sports by virtue of their sex and, in addition, are subjected, in one pretext or another, to discrimination, violence and abuse causing suffering to women including children and the LGBTQ community as a whole. It seems that adequate studies of such delicate issues are yet to be conducted in Nepal.

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the Ministry of Youth and Sports and their office bearers for entrusting, under the terms and conditions set forth by the Ministry, the Trust Research Pvt. Ltd. to conduct this study. We are extremely grateful to Dr.Bishnu Prasad Gautam, who took the lead for this study, made in-depth analysis, and worked day and night for finalizing this Report.  Our sincere thanks are also due to Ms. Bindu Devi Khanal for improving the language and style of the Report as well as to Mr. Mr Sushil Poudel, Dr Bishnu Prasad Bhattarai, Kapil Aryal and Mr. Binaya Neupane for accomplishing the task assigned to them. We are profoundly indebted to the officials of the National Sports Council for their cooperation, all sportsmen for sharing with us their views and experiences and Ms. Drishti Paudel and Mr. Shreejal Bhattarai for compilation and analysis of the data collected for this Study.

Gender violence is a problem that is inherent in perversions of the society for this is a manifestation of not only a violence perpetrated against women but also the reflection of the issues pertaining to the gender equality. This issue is very delicate that calls for dealing with it carefully as it has bearing with the prestige of the family concerned as well as with the image of the society and the nation as a whole. With a view to finding out the ground reality of gender violence, there is a need for in-depth analysis of treatment meted out to them and experiences they have gained for a period spanning several years resulting in identifying the crux of problems and solutions to them. Thus, it can be recommended that further studies be carried out on such issues covering every area of sports activities.
